Jeff Bezos – Personal Life, Business Career & History of Amazon

Jeffrey Preston Bezos or who is popularly known as Jeff Bezos is the richest man in the world as declared by Forbes this year. He is an American by nationality and a technology entrepreneur and also a philanthropist. But the world recognizes him best as the founder, CEO and President of Amazon.

Bezos was born in Mexico and was raised in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Princeton University with degrees in electrical engineer and computer science in 1986. He dedicated his services in Wall Street at the early phase of his career from 1986 up to late 1994.

In the year 1994, he founded Amazon which was first recognized as an online bookstore but later became the hub of a variety of products, transacting across the globe, including audio and video streaming. Currently, Amazon is the world’s largest online sales company. It is also the world’s largest cloud infrastructure service via Amazon web service.

Bezos also founded an aerospace company named the Blue Origin in 2000. The company’s first test flight successfully reached space in 2015 and it has plans to send human suborbital spacecraft in the year 2019. On March 2018 Bezos was declared to be the richest man of the world by Forbes when his net worth passed $112 billion.

Jeff Bezos was the son of young parents named Jacklyn Gise Jorgensen and Ted Jorgensen. After his mother Jacklyn divorced her husband Ted, she remarried a Cuban named Miguel Mike Bezos, who adopted 4-year-old junior Jorgensen so further was known as Jeff Bezos. Shortly after that, the family shifted to Houston, Texas where Jeff began his early schooling. While Jeff was in high school he began working in McDonald’s as a short order line cook. In high school, he was a valedictorian, a national merit scholar and he also won the silver knight award.

In the year 1986, he graduated from Princeton University in the field of electrical engineering and computer science. He was offered jobs from many technology advance companies and he started working at Fitel, a telecommunication startup. He got promoted as the head of development and the director of the customer service. He thereafter transferred his job into the banking industry where he worked from 1988 to 1990. Lately, he worked in a hedge fund named D.E. Shaw & Co. until 1994.

Life and History of Amazon

Jeff decided to launch an online bookstore in late 1993. He left his job from D.E. Shaw & Co. when the thought of this online platform came into his head and he planned its business while on a road trip from New York to Seattle. He named this newly formed company Amazon after the river Amazon of South America. He took $300,000 from his parents to invest in the new company. He also warned the early investors of the company that it may have high chances to fail and even go bankrupt.

Although started as an online bookstore Jeff always wanted to expand the arena of his business to various products. Gradually he diversified his business and started to lead from a pool of competitors.

In late 2002s the company suffered a financial crisis for a substantial period and was almost bankrupt. But again it rebounded and settled its situation well by making a profit of $400 million. They also launched Amazon Kindle and were declared the world’s largest online retailers in late 2008.

Jeff Bezos started selling Amazon shares by which he gained a lot of profit. He expanded his business and in 2018 made a remarkable profit of $2 billion.

Jeff Bezos Personal life

In the year 1992, while Bezos was working in D.E Shaw he met MacKenzie Tuttle, a novelist, who was also a research analyst in the firm. Both of them came in close acquaintance and after a year’s courtship got married. The couple has four children.

In January 2019 the couple decided to call off their marriage and the rest of the life as friends. They called off 25 years of marriage after Jeff Bezos was rumored to be having an affair with TV anchor Lauren Sanchez. The National Enquirer said that Bezos had sent “sleazy texts“ to Lauren.

Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos recently had started a $2 billion homelessness fund and their separation will affect Amazon also. Although it is assumed that Jeff started to date Lauren that made MacKenzie Bezos call for the separation. She had always been very active while working for Amazon. As per law, after the divorce, the wife will get half of her husband’s property which will make MacKenzie Bezos the richest woman in the world.

Jeff Bezos believes in the mantra of “get big fast”. His leadership style is unique and might not be approved by all although his fortune is well appreciated.
